Mystery pixel pictures are a fantastic method for keeping students motivated and working independently. As they solve tasks, a hidden motif is automatically revealed piece by piece.

How to prepare:

• As pixel pictures are usually Google Sheets or Excel files, you should secure the master document: Never edit or overwrite your original file.
• If you work with Microsoft Excel: Share the link to the file as view-only. Your ākonga must first download their own version before they can begin filling it out.
• You can upload the Excel file to your Google Drive if this is your preferred environment
• In Google Drive: Click File > Make a copy before sharing. Share this copy with your learners. You can also change the URL by deleting everything from /edit? onwards and replacing it with /copy. This forces learners to make a copy.
• If you use Google Classroom: Simply create an assignment and select the option "Make a copy for each student".
• Check the answer key: Take a quick look at the answers in the hidden tabs beforehand so you are immediately prepared for any questions.

 How it Works (for Students) - The principle is very simple:

• Read the task: The children look at the given task (e.g. a multiplication sum like $7 × 3$).
• Enter the answer: They type the result into the designated answer field.
• Automatic feedback:
• If the answer is correct, the cells on the left changes colour and a part of the hidden pixel picture is revealed.
• If the answer is incorrect, nothing happens so the children immediately see that they need to try again.
• The goal: By the end, the entire pixel picture is visible and the puzzle is solved.

Pedagogical Tips:

• Differentiation: Because learners work at their own pace, the resource is ideal for independent study, or as an alternative to exercise books.
• Device requirements: The file should work on both tablets (iPad / Android) and laptops/PCs, provided a spreadsheet app (Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel) is installed.
• Zero prep: The material is completely self-marking. You no longer have to painstakingly check homework or rotation work by hand – the children see their success immediately in the growing picture.
